MODEL · WRITER

Early postwar Japanese Kitan Club model and writer publicly known by the model name Kawabata Tanako / 川端多奈子. Born in Matsuyama, Shikoku, she moved to Osaka and worked as a trading-company clerk before becoming a recurring model in 1952. In a March 1955 Kitan Club profile, Takashi Tsujimura says he tied her more often than any other model and dates the beginning of their composed bondage photography to mid-June 1952. She documented in both 1953 Utsukushiki Imashime volumes, contributed diary-like essays and reader correspondence, and took part in Kitan Club's September 1953 roundtable on women's experiences of being tied. Tsujimura again remembered their work together as formative in a 1976 interview.
